LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes – AKA the next generation of lighting. LEDs are lights unlike incandescent bulbs, because they don’t have filament that will wear out and they don’t get particularly hot. They are lit up by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material, and they keep going as long as a standard transistor. The lifespan of a LED surpasses the life of a incandescent bulb by thousands of hours.

LEDs save energy, reduce maintenance and replacement costs, and help protect the environment. Unlike LEDs, most fluorescent lights harbor hazardous materials, such as mercury. That requires careful disposal, ensuring that they don’t contaminate landfill sites. As most can’t be dimmed, fluorescent lights are prone to flickering – resulting in headaches and eye strain. Switch It Up utilizes solid-state technology enabling stable dimming with no flickering. Additionally, fluorescent lights may take time to reach optimum brightness. LED lights are instant-on in any environment (even inside cold rooms and freezers).

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 has the stated mission “to moved the United States toward greater energy independence and security, to increase the production of clean renewable fuels, to protect consumers, to increase efficiency of products, buildings, and vehicles, to promote research on and deploy greenhouse gas capture and storage options, and to improve the energy performance of the Federal Government, and for other purposes.” According to the U.S. Department of Energy, embracing LED lighting on a large scale by 2025 will:
  • See a 62% reduction in energy usage, resulting in 258 million metric tons of emissions being wiped out
  • Greatly reduce the amount of materials being put into landfills, meaning no need to build over 100 new power plants
  • Save the U.S. over $280 billion
To sum that up, yes! Switch It Up can help you conserve energy while saving you money.

The upfront cost of LEDs may be higher than conventional lights, but they save a lot of money over time from reduced energy usage and low replacement and maintenance costs. If it’s a new building, installing LEDs can be the same cost as conventional lights, which means you can start saving money for the very beginning.

You can spend less upfront but spend more money with replacements and maintenance, or make the switch to energy efficient lighting, save money, and join the LED lighting revolution.
